Where do you find more than 30 VW’s in one location? . . . As it turns out not far from home!
When googling the meaning of Dak Dak the other day, I just happened to discover a VW themed cafe by the same name. Not only that, Cafe Dak Dak just happens to be where the VW club of Victoria meet for a monthly coffee run on the third Saturday of each month . . . no guesses where we headed two saturdays ago!
Located in an industrial estate of all places, in the backstreets of Moorabbin, Cafe Dak Dak is a thriving hub and not just for VW enthusiasts.
As you walk through the entrance of this warehouse turned cafe (see previous pic) you are greeted by a larger than life VW sign from the 60’s and as you wander amongst the brightly coloured vintage laminate tables and retro vinyl chairs you enter a world filled with VW memorabilia, everything from toy cars, spare parts and even a checkered bonnet of a VW beetle which has pride of place on one of the cafes walls. It’s a feast for the eyes in which every inch of space is filled with retro bric-a-brac . . . vintage signage, coke machines, toys, eskys, retro kitchen appliances . . . even pink flamingos!
There’s even a vintage caravan, a 1963 Viscount Ambasador, which houses the kitchen where chefs prepare Aussie style breakfast and lunches that are also a little American inspired too! The coffee was surprisingly good and it too was served in vintage coffee mugs reminiscent of those from the 70’s which Ray recalled his mum still has! I remember my grandmother having them too!
I was like a kid in a lolly shop and didn’t know where to start shooting first as also parked outside the cafe were over 30 VW’s of all descriptions . . . some rough and ready, others beautifully restored . . . beetles old and new, 1600 fastbacks, a Karmann Ghia and Kombis galore! We were greeted by many of the Club’s proud owners (and their pooches) some with just as much character as their vehicles!
Infact just earlier that morning, while out walking the dogs Ray had seen a convoy of VW Beetles heading down the highway in that general direction and was sure they were Dak Dak bound . . . sure enough he was right, as we met some of the owners of those very vehicles too!
What a wonderful and entertaining morning it was. This orange beauty, aptly named ‘Peel’ is the first I have featured from the 18 different VW’s I managed to shoot that morning . . . so theres plenty more to come . . . not only that I now have the Clubs itinerary for the whole year . . . not that I need it just yet . . . as VW’s seems to be popping up where ever I am at the moment so there’s no shortage of supply or inspiration!
